THE EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE OF ANAMBRA CONSTABLES, A TRUE REPRESENTATION OF EXCELLENCE - THE OBIANOEFFECT

By Ikenna Aniagboso

Five Anambra born constables emerged top in different categories at the just concluded training of 193 persons at the Nigerian Police Training College, Nekede, Imo state.

This was made known by the Commandant of the college during the passing out parade of the constables on Saturday, 22nd December, 2018.

The five Anambra constables, Meboh Ebere, Ofili Chibuike, Onwubiko Blessing Nneamaka, Eze Loveth and Okeke Modesta are worthy ambassadors of Anambra state and the latest to represent the excellent and resplendent attributes of the 'Obianoeffect'.

To enlighten us a bit, the 'Obianoeffect' is such evidence of good leadership where the stellar qualities of a leader rubs off on his people and drives them to excellence and extra ordinary achievements.

"All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership".

John Kenneth Galbraith aptly captures the basest requirement of a leader in the statement above. The commitment to meet the basic needs of the people and the capacity to beat their expectation forms the hallmark of every good leader.

But beyond that is the ability of a leader to inspire his people to always rediscover themselves and aim higher. It becomes even better when the leader becomes a shining example and model to his people. This is why Edith Wharton postulated that there are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

Gov Willie Obiano has not just been a beacon of shining light to Ndi Anambra, he has also reflected same in the exemplary manner with which he had handled the affairs of the state. The wisdom and prudence employed by the governor in managing the state's meagre finances; effectively apportioning funds to several projects and paying worker's salaries, allowances and pensions, regularly and consistently, directly reflects his stellar qualities.

The noticeable effect of this is the impartation of these excellent qualities to every section and part of the state, especially the lives of Ndi Anambra who have been doing exploits and recording great achievements in their endeavours all over the world.

Several examples exist to buttress this in the private and public sector, inventions, academic s, sports, entertainment, agriculture and commerce but more recently are the noble achievements of the 'Golden Girls' of Anambra who won the World technovation challenge in far away Silicon Valley, USA and the students who returned with Laurels after representing Nigeria and Africa in a world debate challenge. Following are the award winning teachers who led the rest in FG's assessment of teachers nationwide.

More recently however, are the shining examples of excellence and gallantry displayed by these Anambra born men and women who performed exceptionally well at the just concluded training of 193 constables at the Police Training College, Nekede in Imo state.

During their passing out parade, the college commandant called out six best graduating constables of the set for recognition and award presentation. Amazingly but not surprisingly, five were from Anambra state while the sixth hailed from Imo state.

A friend of Ndi Anambra who witnessed the event, felt compelled to air his excitement thus: "I feel it is important that this beautiful development is brought to the knowledge of Ndi Anambra because I think it has something to do with the 'Obianoeffect' which has come to inspire and represent excellence".

Below are the details of the five worthy ambassadors of Anambra state:

1. Best in Drill: Meboh Ebere from Nsugbe, Anambra East LGA

2. Best in Shooting: Ofili Chibuike from Ogwuaniocha, Awka South LGA

3. Best in Academics: Onwubiko Blessing Nneamaka from Okpuno, Awka South LGA

4. Best in Legal Studies: Eze Loveth from Achina, in Aguata LGA

5. Best in Liberal Studies: Okeke Modesta from Ojoto, Idemili South LGA

Bill Bradley once said that leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better and this is what Gov Obiano has provided Ndi Anambra with his leadership style.

With the yuletide in full swing and 2019 approaching speedily, one cannot help but agree that the 'Obianoeffect' succinctly represents excellence in it's truest form and foretells a greater future for Ndi Anambra.
