Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs, Uncovers Fake Blind Begging Syndicate, Using Under Age Trafficked Children To Beg.

By Vincent Ezechukwu

Anambra State Commissioner For Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, in her efforts to eradicate child labour in the state, has stumbled on something very interesting and disheartening.

The Honorable Commissioner, during an exercise to rescue under age children being use to seek for alms in the state, has discovered that most of the minors being used as beggars in different locations in major cities in Anambra State are trafficked from the neighboring states and brought to Anambra State.

These discoveries were made in Onitsha, Amawbia and Awka, when the taskforce led by the Honorable Commissioner attempted to rescue over twenty minors leading presumed blind women to seek for alms. The exercise is part of the efforts by the ministry to assist the children back to school.

It was during interrogation of the women, that it was discovered that they were not blind and that   some of the children were not their biologically children.  These women, who are not truly visually impaired, use blindness as disguise to attract sympathy from the general public. They also revealed that they rent the children from a syndicate that hires them out for a fee.

While it's quite disturbing,  it has now been established without doubt, that  the infermus "Nyere mummy m aka, mummy m adi afu uzo," Child beggars, are mostly trafficked children, who are being abused and denied the right to education.

Consequently, the ministry of Women Affairs,  are collaborating with the police and NAPTIP to investigate the activities of the syndicate behind the nefarious and disturbing act.
