REPORT OF A MEETING BETWEEN THE NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER TO PRESIDENT MOHAMMADU BUHARI AND THE MERGED BODY OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CHRISTIAN TRADITIONAL RULERS OF NIGERIA (AOCTRON)/MIYETTI ALLAH FULANI CATTLE BREEDERS OF NIGERIA

.....on 11th September, 2018, at the office of the National Security Adviser, Major General Mohammed Babagana Monguno (Rtd), Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

BY MADUABUCHI NWALIEJI

The National Security Adviser to the President, Mohammed Babagana Monguno and representatives of Christian Traditional Rulers from the South East, South South and South West Geo-political zones of the country met on how to deescalate tension in the country and foster peaceful coexistence among Farmers and Herdsmen.

The visit in connection with the heightened security challenges in the country was at the instance of the coordinating body chaired by AOCTRON BOT Secretary General and Chairman West African Traditional Rulers, His Imperial Majesty, Eze Dr Nkeli Nzekwe Kelly, Okalakwu of Igbariam Kingdom, Anambra State.

Rev. Dr. Gbenga Ademuyiwa, AOCTRON Royal Bishop and general overseer, tabled the requests of AOCTRON and Miyetti Allah to the NSA and asked government to put them in the picture to offer solutions to the security situations in the country.

The Christian Monarchs and Religious leaders reasoned that as custodians of Christian Traditional values they are closer to the grassroots and could partner with government in tackling the lingering crisis between the farmers and Herdsmen.

We the Traditional and Religious leaders are here to share our vision and mission and what we can do in collaborating with government on the security challenges confronting our nation because we are the custodians operating as front line stakeholders who deal with the people on daily basis. We have a major role to play in information gathering and in using Christian and Traditional methods to resolve the ills in the communities.

The National Security Adviser to the President, Major General Mohammed Babagana Monguno (Rtd), said as quote and thus;

"It is my pleasure to welcome you to the office of the National Security Adviser to the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria. I also wish to appreciate your efforts towards resolving the herdsmen/farmers conflict and by extensively contributing to national security efforts. It is important to state that conflict is part of human existence and as such cannot be eliminated.

Howard Dean, a famous American physician and a retired politician once said in a forum that "There is not one person in this crowd who will agree with everything I say, Not one". So conflicts are bound to co-exist within humans. However, what is key is how the conflicts are resolved.

Mahatma Gandhi said, " An eye for an eye will make the whole world go blind" so a cycle of attacks and reprisals will serve no one any form of good.

It is in this regard that I urge every party in this conflict to embrace all government initiatives to ensure peaceful co-existence and secure society only through which the economy can thrive. So we must as a people find ways that reject revenge, aggression and violence in resolving conflicts. I need to state that our assessment from this office is that the situation in this conflict has been largely manipulated by mischief makers to cloak criminality with the garment of ethno-religious sentiments. The conflict has nothing to do with ethnicity or religion.

We must do all within our powers to correct this dangerous narrative, which attacks our core values and strength of diversity.

I wish to restate that this office is ever ready to support any genuine initiative that will engender national security and prosperity.

I wish to close with the words of a former American President, which states that "Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.

Thanks and God bless
