’THERE IS NO COURSE FOR ALARM ON A CASE OF LASSA FEVER IN THE STATE’’ SAYS ANAMBRA COMMISSIONER FOR HEALTH

Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment and readiness to combat any disease or any Health issue that will endanger the Health of its people. This they’ve shown through their rapid response and management of a Lassa fever case in the State.

The case which was reported at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka was about one Miss Obiekwe Faustina, a 30 year old Student of School of Laboratory Technology, Immaculate Heart Hospital, Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, who hails from Imeziowa Ezeagu in Enugu State.

Speaking during a press briefing in his Jerome Udeorji Secretariat Awka, Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike stated that the Lady was presented at COOUTH on the 5th of June with the history of fever and bleeding from the gum. A clinical diagnosis of Lassa fever was made based on detailed history and physical examination. The case was then reported to the Epidemiology Unit of the State Ministry of Health who immediately took over management. 

The following day, the Patient was transferred to Lassa Fever Institute in Uria, Edo State, where the case was confirmed as Lassa fever. She was immediately admitted in the Isolation ward and treatment was commenced immediately where she was managed for 2 weeks but she unfortunately died on Saturday, 17th June, 2017.

Dr. Akabuike assured the people of the State that there is no cause for alarm as the State has already taken a proactive containment measures by decontaminating and disinfecting the ward were she was managed, the Ambulance and any other object she must have come in contact with. Contact tracing of 63 persons have been identified, 31 of them are mainly Health Workers and students are classified as high risk. 

They are currently been followed up using the necessary surveillance tools. Three of these patients who developed fever have been tested and they are negative. The centre for disease control, Federal Ministry of Health have also been contacted.

Advising the general public to be VERY VERY CAUTIOUS on their hygiene management as Lassa fever is a very dangerous disease which can be avoided through necessary precaution. ‘’keep your environment clean especially free from Rats because that’s the main carrier of this disease, do not eat Rat of any kind, don’t drink soaked garri but if you must do, refry it again to kill any germ in it, learn to keep personal hygiene’’ he said.
